The reasons for wanting to convert your heating system to oil by an electrical system are many. Whether it is to use eco friendly energy and reduce its ecological footprint, lower annual maintenance and insurance costs, eliminate the risk of spilling oil or protect against constant oil price fluctuations, many consumers want to convert their heating system to oil to electric. Here are the options we offer:

In the situation where you own a oil fired furnace, 4 options are available for you: 

  • Option A: You can install a heat pump to reduce your fuel consumption.
  • Option B : You can replace your oil furnace with an electric furnace.
  • Option C : You can replace your oil furnace with an electric furnace and at the same time install an heat pump.
  • Option D : You can install a duct heater (electrical elements that install into the ducts) and transform your furnace into a dual-energy furnace, enabling you to benefit from the Hydro-Québec DT tariff.

In the situation where you own a oil fired boiler heater:

  • Option E : You can install an electric boiler.

Option A : Installation of a heat pump.

If your unique heating source is a forced air oil furnace, you should consider the possibility of installing a heat pump. Here are the main advantages to a heat pump installation: 

  • The heat pump heats your home approximatly 80% of the time up to -12 degrees celsius. When the outside temperatures is lower than -12 it is only the furnace that works.
  • By incorporating a heat pump to your oil burned heating system, you are considered as being bie-energy by Hydro-Quebec. Therefore this gives you a right to the DT rate which saves you close to 20% of your cost per Kw.
  • You will benefit from central air conditionning during the summer season.
  • According to Hydro Quebec, if you own a house built during the 1970's, having an energy rating of 60 and a dimension of 1200 to 1500 sq. feet, your average annual oil consomption for your heating needs is of 2390 liters. Following the installation of a heat pump, your average annual consumption in oil will be reduced to 989 liters and you will consumme an additionnal 6317 kW. Based on Hydro-Quebec's DT rate (4.33¢/kWh), you can expect the following savings :

Option B : Installation of an electric furnace.

The installation of an electric furnace is an interesting option, here are the estimated costs and the aspects to consider with this type of conversion : 

  • To start, we must verify your electrical panel. In order to provide you with an electric furnace, it is necessary for you to have an electrical panel of 200 amperes. We have a electrician at our service.
  • You no longer have an insurance company that requires you to replace your tank every 10 or 15 years. No annual maintenance, no oil line to replace, no risk of oil slide.
  • The electric furnace uses renewable energy that is not harmful to the environment, you stop enriching the oil companies.
  • The installation is relatively simple and takes less than a day. We dismantle your tank, line and  oil furnace and we recover the remaining oil. We take care of the disposal of these equipment.
  • The installation includes the cost for the duct modifications, the electrical hook-up and the cost of the furnace.
  • According to Hydro Quebec, if you own a house built during the 1970's, having an energy rating of 60 and a dimension of 1200 to 1500 sq. feet, your average annual oil consomption for your heating needs is of 2390 liters. Following the installation of an electrical furnace you will consums an average of 18 000 extra kWh. Based on Hydro-Quebec's D rate ( while using the maximum cost per kWh), you can expect the following savings :

Option D : Installation of a duct heather (Thermolec).

A duct-heather is an electrical coil that can be installed in the air-ducts. We use the Thermolec products. 

  • The duct heater can have a wattage of 5 kW à 30 kW.
  • The duct heather qualifies with Hydro Quebec for the DT rate. This allow you savings of nearly 20% of the cost per kWh.
  • Thanks to this product, you will sensibaly be functionning like a bie-energy furnace. Up to -12 degres Celsius, the Thermolec will be heating like an electric furnace. When it will be colder then -12 degres Celsius, the oil furnace will take over.
  • Usually we install a duct heather only with an oil furnace. In real life, it is nearly impossible to install a duct heather when there is already a central air conditioner or a heat pump install. There will be simply not enough place to fit the duct heather with the interior coil. If you install a duct heather, you have to be aware that you will have to make a choice if you want to install a central air conditioner in the future.
  • According to Hydro Quebec, if you own a house built during the 1970's, having an energy rating of 60 and a dimension of 1200 to 1500 sq. feet, your average annual oil consomption for your heating needs is of 2390 liters. Following the installation of a Thermolec you will consume approximately an extra 15 840KW. Based on Hydro-Quebec's DT rate (4.33¢ kWh) you can expect the following savings :
